Dear Sweet Laasya,
Today you are 6 years old and mommy is a few days from finishing her first year of MBA. I don't know if you realize it, but i love you.
I want to tell you about friends, and tie it back to what we saw in Harry Potter. Remember that in life, every one that claims to be your friend or everyone that you may consider to be your friend is not necessarily a friend. That is why, when picking and evaluating friends, it is important to be discerning.
1. Not everyone who acts friendly is your friend.
Think back to Professor Quirrell in Sorcerer's Stone. He is seemed sympathetic, friendly and sweet - and you realize only at the end that he is a host for Voldermort and had actively tried to harm Harry Potter at various times earlier in the movie. This is the most dangerous kind of friend - and come by dime a dozen. Don't forget Pettigrew - the 'friend' who causes the death of Lily and James Potter.
2. Not everyone who seems unfriendly is trying to harm you.
Well now this one is obvious, isn't it? It is Severus Snape that I talk about. From the first book until the last, we are led to believe that he hates harry potter. He is shown to be unfriendly, even mean. It is only at the end you realize the extent of his sacrifice and his deep running love for Lily and Loyalty to Dumbledore. He was in fact, Harry Potter's silent guardian. This is the type of friend you don't want to lose and perhaps want to forgive them, their hard exterior.
3. Some people who seem nice are indeed nice.
Don't let #1 turn you into a cynic. Be open to receiving love when you get it from the Dumbledores, Hagrids, McGonagalls and Nevilles of the world. The fact that #1 exist does not preclude the fact that #3 exist also. I hope you turn out to be this kind of friend.
4. Some people who seem mean, well, are really just mean.
The observation we made about #2 should not blind you to the Vodermorts and Bellatrixs and Malfoys of the world. Not everyone who appears mean is harboring a soft tender bleeding heart on the inside. Sometimes, they really are just mean. I hope you don't turn out this way, but if you must be mean, i'd rather that you be #4 than #1.
Some day let's talk about what makes for a good friend.
Oh by the way, I am not sure I said this before - I Love You.
